The Erasmus+ project, "Our commitment to associations: new approaches against precariousness and for inclusion," focuses on supporting vulnerable groups by exploring innovative approaches to inclusion and addressing precariousness. As part of this project, collective workshops were organized in Nidge (Turkey), Cognac (France), and Huelva (Spain). These workshops brought together volunteers, employees of NGOs, and adults in precarious situations to identify specific challenges and share effective strategies for social inclusion.
Workshop in Nidge, Turkey: Addressing Multidimensional Precariousness
The workshop in Nidge took place at the Nidge Community Center on October 5, 2023. It gathered 15 volunteers, 5 NGO employees, and 20 adults facing precariousness. The primary goal was to identify the specific needs of these adults and share effective support strategies. Participants engaged in various activities, including an awareness session on different forms of precariousness in Turkey and group discussions on challenges such as employment, housing, and healthcare. The workshop emphasized the importance of collaboration between volunteers and employees and proposed the establishment of professional training and psychological support programs to help adults regain autonomy.
Workshop in Cognac, France: Innovative Solutions for Social Inclusion
Held on October 9, 2023, the workshop in Cognac at the House of Citizenship and International Solidarity gathered 20 volunteers, 6 employees of social organizations, and 25 adults in precarious situations. The discussions revolved around issues like fuel poverty, social isolation, and difficulties accessing public services. Innovative solutions were proposed, such as the creation of shared gardens and solidarity cafes, which can foster social connections and provide support to those in need. Training sessions focused on stress management and non-violent communication, highlighting the importance of continuous capacity building for volunteers and employees to enhance the quality of support provided.
Workshop in Huelva, Spain: Co-Designing Solutions with a Participatory Approach
The workshop in Huelva, organized at the Huelva Social Center on October 8-9, 2023, involved 18 volunteers, 5 local association employees, and 25 adults in precarious situations. A participatory diagnosis identified major challenges, including unemployment, discrimination, lack of housing, and social exclusion. Participants co-designed support solutions such as professional skills workshops and mentoring programs to strengthen social connections. The workshop underlined the necessity of participatory approaches that directly involve affected individuals in developing suitable solutions.
Key Findings and Recommendations
The workshops in Turkey, France, and Spain highlighted the unique challenges of precariousness in each country and fostered the sharing of innovative approaches to better support vulnerable populations. The key findings include:
Adopt a Holistic Approach: Precariousness is multidimensional, encompassing economic, social, and psychological aspects. A comprehensive approach that considers these factors is essential for effective support.
Strengthen Collaboration: Effective solutions require collaboration among volunteers, employees, and the adults affected by precariousness. Leveraging both internal and external resources can create conditions for reducing precariousness and fostering empowerment.
Promote Social Innovation: Innovative initiatives, such as shared gardens and digital platforms, can play a significant role in social inclusion. These solutions should be encouraged and expanded to reach more people in need.
Invest in Training: Continuous training for volunteers and employees is crucial to improving the quality of support and addressing the specific needs of vulnerable groups. Increasing participation in Erasmus+ training programs is a strategic priority.
Involve the Affected Individuals: Participatory approaches that engage those directly impacted by precariousness in solution development are essential to ensure relevance and effectiveness. This involvement is the first step towards empowerment.
Conclusion
The collective workshops held as part of the Erasmus+ project provided valuable opportunities to enhance skills, share best practices, and develop innovative solutions for supporting adults in precarious situations. Implementing the recommendations derived from these workshops will contribute to improving social inclusion and combating precariousness in the countries involved.
The success of these initiatives underscores the importance of a coordinated, inclusive approach to social issues, where local communities and international cooperation work hand-in-hand to build a more equitable future for all.
